Age of Sigmar League Starts Big

Recently, the Knights of the Gaming Table started an Age of Sigmar league. I can hear your groans. Many in the club, like many of you out there were against the edition/system change. It was reviled and avoided. I had always wanted to give it a try, and since I was against playing my Tomb Kings in 8th, it wasn't as much a thing for me. However, finding an opponent to try it out seemed impossible, especially since there are so many other games going in the hole, especially X-Wing and 40K.
The GW rep wasn't willing to let us give up, however. He pushed the store to push the game. The store manager brought it up to me repeatedly. So, I set about making an easy league to get people to just play. It isn't super competitive, you just get stuff for playing.
The result, 8 player, plus myself, playing on the day of the league start. One player did walk away, but the seven others bought in. In the past two weeks, and even leading up to the league, a majority of games have been AoS. All in all, everyone seems to be enjoying the game.
I know there are plenty of haters out there, but just give it a try with an open mind. Play it like a brand new game you just happen to have WAY to many models for. We are using Scroll Builder for points. We are currently using the Pool system, but the SCGT system also has promise. Drop the sudden death rules, they crush the fun. Grab some scenarios from the books or we are using the SCGT ones.
Hey, if you want, come join us. I know I will be playing it this Saturday.

KoGT X-Wing Tournament Series

With the explosive interest in X-Wing in the store and at our store tournaments, we will be hosting an X-Wing Tournament Series. With the tournament last Saturday being the unofficial start.

Each event will have a $10 entry fee, and will be hosted monthly.

The next even will be on March 26th, 2016.

Going forward, this will allow us to get the larger prize packs and better prize support.

We are looking forward to see you all there.

Brawl in the Hall, Round 2

Looking to kick off the summer with an uppercut to the chin, we are bringing back the Brawl In the Hall Malifaux Tournament for a second year, with hopes to turn it into a recurring event. We will be playing 50ss, Gaining Grounds. I am planning on three rounds, but that will depend on turnout. Entry fee will be $10, and we will start at 11:00, so please be there early. I can accept preregistration on any Saturday leading up to the event.

Back in Action

After a fairly successful Dropzone League, action returned to normal, down in the hole. We saw the return of 40K to more than one table, and there is even talk of Fantasy next week. We even went into the deep and founded a Space Marine Chapter in the late hours of the night.

So, why weren't you there? See you next week.

ILR : Round 3

M: Hello, Bob.
B: Good evening, Mark.
M: Boy do we have an action packed round of Infinity bouts. After two rounds of prelims, it is time to start into the main battles. These are the one that will decide it all.
B: Indeed. The first two rounds set up the brackets, but now it is time to GET IT ON!

B: Round one pits Allan with his Aleph versus Nate with his Combined Army.
M: I don't see this one taking long, Bob.
B: Really, Mark, and why is that?
M: Because, Bob, I see Allan coming in with a good solid punch, and Nate crying a like dirty whore in the corner. Just like the one I paid last night...
B: Mark.
M: I told her her toes were ugly, and she spent the next hour sobbing a river...
B: Mark!
M: Best money I ever spent, I tell you. Why it was even better that that time...
B: MARK!
M: What?
B: The contenders.
M: Oh, right. I think Allan has a good solid list, but has needlessly hampered himself by chaining to a small set of models. The choices are good, but the lack of change will let his opponents know what is coming.
B: I agree. And if a player is going to be able go read that list and know what to expect, in this league, it is going to be Nate. He is by far the most experienced in the system, with years of background, and I think he may have even taught some of the big wigs how to play.
M: It is quite possible, but I still say he cries out turn one.

B: Well, that will have to remain to be seen. On to match two. This one is Michael S with Yu Jing versus Patrick M with Ariadna. Talk about two different sides of the track.
M: Indeed. Mike will bringing speed and mobility, while Patrick will be bringing numbers and firepower. I think it will really come down to Mike's use or not use of the Impetuous orders. If he gets caught out in the open with enough firepower, Patrick will take him down.
B: That's true Mark, but I think that Patrick will be hard pressed to keep up with Mike's speed. With a good mission pool Mike will have the upper hand. With a little bit of terrain luck, Patrick could be in a real tough place.
M: Looks like this one is up for debate, we will just have to see how it goes down.

M: Match three will be Nabors versus Paul. This is a Pan O versus Ariadna match.
B: This one looks to be hot. Nabors has been a loose contender for his entire Infinity career. He tend to bring a lot of guns to the fight, generally bringing down opponents with sheer weight of shots.
M: While that is near fact, I think that Paul is the one to watch in this match, Bob. He started out rough, but picks up more tricks with every passing game. He is a quick study, and quickly adapts his opponent's strategies to use as his own. His first match was against Nate. Nate used some rules that Paul had no idea even existed, but by game two, Paul was using them fluently. He was able to bring Patrick to a 4-4 draw on his second game. I expect him to climb the ranks very quickly.
B: Mark, clearly Nabors will have Paul's number though. He is by far the more experienced and has been watching Paul during his rise, and will be able to counter the simple tricks Paul is using.
M: I wouldn't call them simple, Bob. Paul remains my favorite for this match. But these next two contestants are a much closer pick.

B: Indeed, Bob. This is a Pan O versus Pan O match. Both of these guys had rough starts in the prelims, neither gaining a big W.
M: That is true Mark, but I do think one of them will walk away from this round with a win.
B: This game will be all about who scores the most points. I think whoever can get the most points will win this game.
M: Yes, Bob, that will be a deciding factor, but also, who can keep his opponent from getting more points will also stand a chance of winning.
B: Either way Bob, getting more points or keeping their opponent from getting more points, I do believe one of these guys will be able to take home the win.

M: Well, Bob, it looks like some hard matches ahead, and it is only round one of the scored events.
B: Indeed, Mark. And we still have three more rounds to go. At this point it is anyone's league.
M: Until next time, this is Mark.
B: And this is Bob.
M: Signing off for the Infinity League Report.

Disclaimer: Thanks to Nate for taking the brunt of this write up, as my opponent he took the most crap. Hope he is a good sport, and doesn't cry TOO much when I stomp his face. Also, the views and opinions expressed are mine and do not, necessarily, reflect the opinions of the Knights of the Gaming Table or their sponsors, though we are all jerks, so they may be similar.

Genghiscon XXXV

Another Con in the bag. The Tournament had 36 players out of 47 signed up. Best overall went to the power house Elizabeth Luben, Best Painted went to Eric Jung, Best General went to Richard Johnson, Best Sportsman went to Matt Vandenheever, Player's Choice went to Tulio Wolford.

After a late start due to selling out of tickets and having a 7 person wait list, and then having 11 registered players not show up, I think the tournament, as a whole, went fairly smoothly. We did have some problems with a few people conceding games, which is a problem I will have to look into, and I have to admit that I was completely unprepared for. Overall, I don't think it would have been a problem, except that one of the games was for first place. We also had a lemonade stand raffle for people who lost games, and that also caused some problems for players. I had thought it would be something fun for all the people who come to the tournament to play, and not really stand a chance of winning any of the big prizes, but it turned into a big thing for a player who won all his games, but didn't have the battle points to win the event, which meant he wasn't eligible for any prize support. I hadn't thought of door prizes as that important to the players at the top tables, and so it hadn't occurred to me that it would offend one of the player's so. The end result was that 4 players went 3-0, with one of them getting best general, and the other 3 not getting anything. I'm not sure if the player thought that a chance for a ~$100 box for taking it to the max was not as worth it as an entry into a drawing for a $10 gift card, or maybe some dice, but I guess it was.

So, a good event(from my perspective), but plenty of hitches and kinks. I think I may have to go back to a book start of 8:30, but an event start of 9:00, even though I get knocked for a late start then, too, at least that way I can mark it down to players not bothering to read their packs. Which are a lot of work, but whatever.

There are plenty more pictures of the event, and those can be expected probably later this week, but that is our photographer's baby.

THE IRONMAN COMETH!

Get ready. Well, get as ready as you can!

Actually, try not to think about it too much.

Okay, better just skip it entirely.

That's right kiddos, it's IRONMAN Painting Challenge time again! Starting Saturday, February 8th at 12:00 PM, the Knights and all welcome guests will be painting for MORE THAN 24 HOURS STRAIGHT!
Untitled

Yeah, you read that right.

Bring your brushes, paints, lights, super-special helmets, pillows, and crack cocaine to the least advisable hobby event of the year. Get ready for delirium, constant irritating chatter, sleep deprivation, and belated procrastination.  What more could you ask for?

What more, you say?  How about a special guest?!

That's right, this Winter's IRONMAN Special Guest is NATE!! He'll be there to answer any and all of your painting and hobby questions.  Sorry.

The event will run from noon Saturday until we poke our own eyes out mid Sunday afternoon.
You were warned.

And the Inquisitor Lays Down the Hammer

Well, I was late to the show on Saturday, but I still managed to get in a game of Malifaux and some after hours Deathwatch and Dark Heresy. Other systems making appearances included Warhammer Fantasy, Bolt Action, and Warhammer 40K. Basically, the scene is hopping. So, where were you?

See you down there next weekend!

Malifaux League comes to a close.

Another league comes to close. And even with a random draw, Troy still some how manages to come out on top. Seriously, I almost redrew. Second went to Shaffer.
Final Achievement points:
Patrick - 33
Troy - 29
Nabors - 16
Shaffer - 13

Next up on the league list? Maybe Infinity. Likely end of February or early March.

Hope to see many of you there!

Malifaux League Running Strong

The Malifaux League is almost half way done, though it has been extended until November 30th, due to scheduling conflicts with the Pathfinder Society on the 23rd. Patrick looks to be the leader on achievement point, though everyone is fairly close. As it is a drawing, just entering gets you a ticket. We currently have five players, but I will take more through next week.

Other gaming hasn't been shut down for the league by any means. Last week also saw players throwing down 40K and some after hours Deathwatch/Dark Heresy.

Things are hoping, be sure to drop on by!

Another looney Iron Man Painting Challenge comes to a close!

We did it!

Well, some of us did it.  The rest are too smart. After a grueling 27+ hours, our semi-annual painting marathon has ended. Tears were shed, dudes were painted, caffeine was consumed.  In the end, only Michael, Allan, and Nate made it all the way through. Which means that the old dudes outlasted the kids.  Shame, shame, shame.  Photos from the event and color commentary after the jump!

Tacticon Prep RTT: Round 1

Over the weekend, the Knights hosted a 3 round 40K tourney, using scenarios we are tinkering with for Tacticon. I was TO and felt it went rather well. We had a great group of guys come up from Colorado Springs. We had 9 players, though, if some people could work an alarm, we may have had 11 or 12. We are running another one on the 17th, and hope to have an even better turn out. If we can get 10 players, I would like to add a best painted or players choice into the mix. Sorry, no sports, its to hard to judge when you play your opponent every week. "Would you play this guy again?" "Do I have a choice"... On to the results.

Placings:
1st Matt(Tyranids): 59 points
2nd Jason(Daemons): 42 points
3rd Shaffer(Tau): 42 points(with a by)

Read on for pictures of the rounds.

Project 2d8 on communityfunded.com

Hello!  DB here.

I usually don't soapbox here, but our friends over at Project 2d8 have a cool project up that we think a lot of the gaming community will be interested in.  It is an open source web-based platform that provides in person and in-chat RPG mapping and utilities!  Kind of like what Dungeon Tools completely failed to do.

Have a look at the facebook page, like em up, and then if you are keen on it, head on over to communityfunded.com and "endorse" the project (it's like a like on facebook).

They are participating in a promotional thing that Community Funded is putting on where if they are in the top four projects as far as endorsements are concerned they get a boost to their funding, so right now, endorsements are pretty huge.

I've included the links to their stuff, and I know these guys would love to here some suggestions. If you have any questions, I can do my best to answer them, or you can just ask them.

Tacticon 2013 RTT codex cut-off clarification!!

Hello all.  Just a quick clarification.  In the pamphlet for the RTT at Tacticon, the cut-off date for codexes is May 31st.

THIS IS INCORRECT.  CORRECT CODEX CUT-OFF is July 31st.

The new Eldar codex will be legal, as will the Iyanden and Farsight supplements.

*Thumbsup*!

Sorry for the confusion!

Confessions of a Brushlicker: Because they said I couldn't...

Hello all!

Dark Brotherhood here.  I have been eating paint for a loooong time, and in that time, I have painted armies poorly, well, slowly, medium fast...you name it.  But lately, I have been painting EXTRA slow, working on techniques, instruction of others, single figure and small group stuff.  I recently took 1st in Unit at Ghengis Con Denver with my Space Hulk dudes, which I have been painting SINCE THE DAMNED GAME CAME OUT!

(2009)

Ugh.

That's 9 dudes in 4 years, if you are keeping track.

But the one thing I haven't really tried to do is speed paint an entire army.

And because they said I couldn't do it, and because Tacticon is coming up, and because my Farsight Spam list is undefeated currently, I have decided to paint my Tau army in 70 days. Here is one of the color schemes:

I painted these dudes and their 8 buddies in a week. They are
1.primed with Tamiya Fine Surface grey,
2.washed in ice blue and wolf grey made into a wash
3.Overhead sprayed with GW white primer
4. Airbrushed with Parma Faschange red

Those steps take about an hour total

5. Edge highlighted in white
6. black detail added.

At this pace, I think I can whip out the rest of the dudes (drones and Pathfinders) next week.
The visual theme of the army is "Imperial Koi fish"  like the white, orange, and black Japanese karp.
Some units and/or suits will be black, white or orange, and vehicles will be digicamoed in a splotchy, koi-like scheme.

The hard thing for me is learning to let go of anal-retentiveness and trust that I know enough about techniques and tricks to make a great looking army without taking an eternity.
Wish me luck, I'm going in.
